After the 1925-26 season, Billy Coutu was traded to the Boston Bruins. In 1927, Coutu was the first player banned from the NHL for life. He hit referee Jerry LaFlamme during a brawl in a Stanley Cup game between the Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators. This brawl was carried out at the request of Art Ross the Bruins coach. Frank Calder the NHL's first president expelled Billy from the NHL for life on April 13, 1927.
